In most companies age is a criteria for retirement. This results in a tremendous loss of expertise as the organication looses it's most experienced personnel purely due to an administrative norm.

Is the time right to reconsider our idea of retirement especially when there is such a paucity of experienced personnel?

Fitness level may vary from person to person because I have seen 80 yrs.old man perfectly fit to handle the business. The physical age has nothing to do with mental age hence the ability to be alert & fit physically has nothing to do with the physical age.

I would like to support both fitness and age. Fitness, as well said that physical fitness has nothing to do with mental fitness and as far as experience goes it really does matter in the corporate world. But there might be few sectors where physical fitness matters a lot but I don't think the majority of people after gaining experience would fall into that category.

As per my opinion on the basis of fitness of human beings retirement process should be processed as we cannt measure a specific person in terms of age . i think whenever a man can do a particular job as per his/her fitness that one is the perfect meassure of a human beings for his retirement time.

In my opinion neither age nor fitness can be the prime deciding criterion. Being young or fit is never a guarantee that one can perform at work place. Especially when one is in senior managament role he becomes inexpendable only due to his expertise & talent that he has accrued thru ages.

My age is 55 ! Do you think, I should retire ... ?

I feel I have just started and miles to go and journey has just begun. Fitness is all in the state of mind and I feel I have great worth to contribute !

I have seen people past 70-80 more young than 30-40 without any grey/white hairs; Of Course, I am not that fit compared to 30 & 40's, but I can be fit/healthy, if I try, make some efforts, take proper care/treatment etc. and keep myself aligned to natural principles etc.

Whether a person needs to retire depends entirely on his worth and contribution he can make ... Maturity and experience does count along with intrinsic worth, which needs to be taken into account while considering retirement ...

Even retired soldiers are asked to get ready for emergency.........it is fitness that rules whether person is young or old..........also it can depend on the certain range of job profiles for the aged ..........and also fitness can vary from person to person in the old age.

This question had been earlier asked by Devi, in Too-steps already?

Anyhow, I’ll pen down my thoughts once again. Retirement is a word which has very negative meaning. Coz, a Man as long as his existence is there, he keeps on gathering experiences ie “Anubhav Dhara”. The day he stops gathering experiences, he ceases to exist.

Now the examples that U have quoted about Hussain, Mandela etc, speak itself, that the body of the man may not be as active as it was say at the age of 30 or 40, but what about his Mind?

Which has grown and procuring thoughts even if he may not be as physically active at a ripe age say 65 or 70 yrs. But he is still not retiring from LIFE. Thus retirement from work, does not mean that he needs to sit idle and do nothing, even if the System has put him in the category of “Retirement”. It’s just that he needs to find a vocation which is suitable to his current status, ie physiological and psychological.

what would you prefer young and unfit or old and fit. The answer is obvious. Yet we force people into inactivity once they have reached a certain age.

A Hussain at 95 or a Zohra at 90 or a Mandela have the energy that puts a youth to shame. While there a cases and cases of people in their 40's who have due to sheer negligence have lost their zest for life, have lost their quest for learning, have lost their enthusiasm to compete, have ------just lost it.

Retirement should be an individual decision taken in consultation with management. As long as the person is a positive contributor and brings value on the table there should be no reason to force him into inactivity.

Ironical you get voted for this comment rather than your comment on the fitness side!! Mr. Bagla, you are what you are and not the benchmark for the junta of India. lets be realistic here please. if you think you are fit and would like to continue please do so by all means!!

Why do HR have a norm about people working beyond a certain age (say 58 years)?? its all about the time taken to get things done!! Action and Reaction both have to be omni present in a person beyond that age. Age takes a NATURAL toll on the reproduction of cells in your body which leaves the mind and body both a little less fresher than when you are 40+. Its a natural phenomenon. Ideally who wishes to continue and make more out of life would do so in an administrative functionality where the stress levels are quite manageable!!

Nobody is a superman and should recognise that as a FACT of LIFE!! If my comments have hurt somebody or everyone, so be it!! I am not the person to advocate to work beyond an age that says to take care of grand children and enjoy being pampered!! Thank you one and all :))

Its just like choosing in between not on what advantage they have but what's the big flaw & in which?

I think fitness per se should be the criterion but then again how one can define one to be fit?

Are their going to be Sunday race events? Or an asthmatic or people with ailments like BP, low/high sugar or like that which are inevitable with most of the people with current trends of living, should be discarded?

I mean to say what'd be the criterion & what level of manipulation can be & 'd be done by the people specially in our country?

Its very convenient to define age but too complicated to define fitness I suppose.

Yes, performing ones should be always spared from age factor as far as possible & it should be the performance that should become the standard.

It should be age... and must be less than 60 years ... say 55 years .... all the new generation are equipped with good tools and understanding and specially non-matchable energy ..... after 55,  we can create a place for young generation and create a pool of emplyment for them ... which is essentially now a days. They definitely need a experienced brain who can guide them properly and utilize their energy ... no biological clock works here ... its a altogether zeal and attitude towards work which normally enhance when you achieve certain level of exposure ... but retirement should be before 60 ... its a time when you can guide and train the new work force for the future and it can be done on contract also ...

It has to be age!!

How can we defy the biological clock?? It is an inversley propotional process. As the clock ticks your life to higher years, it reduces the strength of your resistance internally. Strength is not an external factor alone. Its not about the number of bench presses or curls or triceps that you hit, but its about your internal strength that helps you sustain stamina!!

Age is the most critical factor here. How can you cope with stress??? Is it because you are fit externally?? I doubt it. Its because you are fit mentally. When yopu age, the muscles loose their definitions and generally turn flabby. The stomach starts to expand and the waistline gathers a lot of deposit. Actions become slower and so does the reaction time. Purely on the basis of biological importance, I go with age and not fitness!!
